According to a 2020 study by AAA, the average yearly national average cost of car insurance with comprehensive and collision (full coverage) is $1,202 per year. $644 per year for liability only.
Of course, none of us are average, none of us live in all 50 states at once (Arizona has higher rates), and there are a lot of factors that go into each individual’s rates.
Factors that Affects Car Insurance Rates
Some of these factors include:
- Deductibles and Limits on the Policy
- Make, Model, and Age of Vehicle
- Marital Status and Other Household Drivers
- Credit History
- Driving History
- Claims History
- Urban or Rural Garaging Zip Code by State
- Male vs. Female Drivers
- Young Drivers vs. Mature
- Profession and Education
- Number of vehicles on the policy
Average Car Insurance Costs in Arizona
According to the Arizona Department of Insurance, there are almost 200 insurance companies writing auto policies in Arizona.
Each year the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions conduct a survey of these companies to help consumers identify the best rates and compare quotes.
They also include the average number of complaints per policy sold per car insurance company to help consumers make better decisions on the quality of the service they can expect to receive.
Some of the results taken from their survey are as follows:

Potential Errors in Average Arizona Car Rates
Having experience with the companies in the Arizona Department of Insurance survey and understanding how their individual underwriting works, I recognize that this is a somewhat flawed analysis.
I greatly appreciate this survey because it brings to my attention carriers I may not be aware of. This helps me round off the companies I offer my clients.
For example, Bristol West rates never come in as good as what I am seeing in this survey.
Some of the factors that could be causing this are:
- Credit, every carrier looks at different aspects of credit and rates those aspects as it benefits them. Credit is a sliding scale, and no one has 100% clean credit.
- Very few customers are “claims free”. Some carriers go back 3 years while others go back 5. Even if there are no collision claims, most people will at least have a comprehensive claim for a windshield.
Carriers with the best rates can only continue to keep rates low by watching out for people that file small claims. Some carriers even consider roadside assistance as a claim. Higher rates are often a factor in comprehensive claims.
Shop Your Insurance Situation with an Arizona Broker
If there is one takeaway I want my readers to leave with after looking at this survey data, it is no company can be competitive in all scenarios. Each carrier has an appetite for specific kinds of clients, risks, and rates accordingly.
If a client does not meet those underwriting guidelines, the carrier simply increases the premium until the client shops somewhere else.
Just because an insurance company works for your neighbor or a family member does not mean they will be a good fit for you.
Because of this, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a good broker that knows you and how to navigate the complex insurance industry.
By partnering with the best carriers in Arizona, Independent Insurance Brokers Arizona is sure to find the best fit for your unique circumstances. Without you having to become an insurance expert or spend days hunting down the best insurance carriers.
